Long tables, rounds, or both
British and Irish venues lean towards long trestle tables set perpendicular to a top table, which is why the 50-guest rectangular template is the starting point here. Barn venues and marquees often mix the two: a top table across the end, two or three long tables down the room, and a couple of rounds where the shape of the space demands it.
Drag whatever you need onto the canvas and set the seats per table. The plan on screen should look like the room, because that is what makes it possible to spot the guest sitting with their back to the speeches.
- Trestle and long tables, round tables of 8, 10 or 12
- A top table that the auto-assign never reshuffles
- Rotate tables so the plan matches the actual floor
The top table comes first
The traditional top table seats eight along one side, facing the room: chief bridesmaid, groom's father, bride's mother, the couple in the middle, then groom's mother, bride's father and the best man. Plenty of couples ignore all of it and sit with their friends, or use a sweetheart table for two.
Whichever you choose, mark it as the top table. It stays exactly as you set it while the rest of the plan is generated around it.
Write down the difficult pairings
Every family has a few. Divorced parents who should not share a table, the uncle who will corner anyone about politics, the friend who has fallen out with another friend since the invitations went out.
Enter them as keep apart rules and they hold through every version of the plan. Households and couples go in as keep together rules so they are never split by a late change. When a rule cannot be honoured, you are told which one, rather than finding out on the night.
RSVPs change, the plan should not start over
Numbers move right up to the final headcount call with the caterer. Adding six names or removing a table is a paste and a click, and the plan regenerates with all your rules and manual placements still in place.
That is the real saving. The first draft was never the expensive part.
Print the plan, or share it
Export the table plan for the printer, for the sign at the entrance, or for the calligrapher doing place cards. The free export has a small watermark on it. A one-off event pass (9 USD, or 9 EUR in the euro area) removes it, saves the plan to the cloud and unlocks the guest link.
The guest link is worth the money on the day: guests type their name on their phone and see their table, which removes most of the queue at the entrance board.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between a table plan and a seating plan?
In UK usage they are mostly interchangeable. A table plan usually means the board at the entrance telling guests which table they are on. A seating plan can go further and specify the exact seat.
Who sits at the top table?
The traditional arrangement is the couple in the centre with both sets of parents beside them, the best man and the chief bridesmaid at the ends. A sweetheart table for two is now common enough that nobody will blink, and it simplifies a lot of family questions.
How do I seat divorced parents?
Give each of them a table of their own people, at an equal distance from the couple, rather than putting them side by side at the top table. Add a keep apart rule so no later reshuffle undoes it.
When should the table plan be finished?
Aim to have the room laid out weeks ahead and the names settled about a week before, once the final numbers have gone to the caterer. Expect at least one more change after that.
Is it free to make a wedding table plan?
Free up to the finished plan. Building, editing and auto-filling need no account. The event pass costs 9 USD once and adds cloud saving, a clean export and the guest link for 12 months.
Can I mix round and rectangular tables in one plan?
Yes. Seat counts and shapes are set per table, which is how most real venues are laid out anyway.
